William Kemp Starrett (American, 1889-1952) Another War in Mexico newspaper cartoon, 1913 India ink and gouache on heavyweight paper 21 x 17 inches (53.3 x 43.2 cm) (image) Signed lower left: W. K. Starrett William K. Starrett was an accomplished and versatile cartoonist and illustrator who worked free-lance and for newspapers in New York, Philadelphia and the Northeast. His cartoons appeared in the magazines Life, New Yorker, and Saturday Evening Post and in the Albany Knickerbocker Press, Philadelphia Evening Ledger, and other newspapers. In addition to drawing editorial cartoons and illustrations he was the artist for comic strips Roy Powers, Eagle Scout (1937) and Vignettes of Life (1939). This impressive original was published in November 1913, likely in a newspaper, during the struggles for power in Mexico. Uncle Sam is clearly perturbed by news that there is "Another War in Mexico." Rebellions led by Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata against the fraudulently elected President Victoriano Huerta began in 1913 and continued into the following year. United States President Woodrow Wilson imposed an arms embargo on Mexico, and the April 9, 1914, arrest in Tampico of nine American sailors by forces loyal to Huerta. The sailors were released, yet President Wilson ordered the occupation of Veracruz to prevent delivery of a shipment of weapons to the Huerta regime.
