Condition Report:
The canvas is original. Overall the work appears to be in very good condition. There are pinholes to the canvas in the corners. There are light frame abrasions and rubbing to the edges and corners. There is light surface dirt and some specks of dirt and light staining in places. Inspection under UV light reveals isolated and scattered spots and small areas of retouching, mainly to the sea. The work is presented in an ornate gilt frame.

Catalogue Note:
A Shining Palace belongs to William Leech’s most progressive and accomplished period of his career between 1903 and 1919, when he was engaged in a sustained quest for 'trying to evolve sunlight and reflections'.

Like many of his Irish predecessors, Leech had left Ireland to experience first-hand the latest artistic developments on the Continent, studying at the Académie Julian in Paris. The paintings produced over the following the years reveal this influence, employing an Impressionistic approach to painting though broken brushwork, bold colour and unconventional compositional structures.

In the present work, the attention is not on the famous Venetian buildings, here confined to a slender upper edge of the painting although unmistakably identifiable; rather it is the play of light on the water that occupies his attention. Using a tonal, modulated palette, Leech beautifully evokes the movement of the water through free and accomplished brushwork, capturing the reflections of St Mark’s Campanile and the Doge’s Palace.

Leech had travelled in Venice and onwards to Switzerland in 1911, inspiring a body of work which was then exhibited at the Goupil Gallery in 1912, Visions of Switzerland, Venice etc. by W. J. Leech, R.H.A. The works from this period reveal Leech’s emphasis on the key elements, paring back extraneous details. As Denise Ferran writes, ‘Leech was refining the painterly technique he had developed in Concarneau from 1903 onwards, aware of Whistler's harmonies and fluidity and directness of Lavery's landscapes’ (D. Ferran, William John Leech An Irish Painter Abroad, 1996, p.56). Such sophisticated works as A Shining Palace revealed Leech’s position as one of the most pioneering painters of his generation.

A Shining Palace appartient à la période la plus progressiste et la plus accomplie de la carrière de William Leech, entre 1903 et 1919, lorsqu'il était engagé dans une quête soutenue visant à « essayer de faire évoluer la lumière du soleil et les reflets ».

Comme beaucoup de ses prédécesseurs irlandais, Leech avait quitté l'Irlande pour découvrir les derniers développements artistiques du continent, étudiant à l'Académie Julian à Paris. Les peintures produites au cours des années suivantes révèlent cette influence, employant une approche impressionniste de la peinture à travers un pinceau brisé, des couleurs vives et des structures de composition non conventionnelles.

Dans le présent travail, l'attention n'est pas portée sur les célèbres bâtiments vénitiens, ici limités à un bord supérieur élancé du tableau bien qu'indubitablement identifiable ; c'est plutôt le jeu de lumière sur l'eau qui retient son attention. À l’aide d’une palette tonale et modulée, Leech évoque magnifiquement le mouvement de l’eau à travers un travail de pinceau libre et accompli, capturant les reflets du Campanile Saint-Marc et du Palais des Doges.

Leech avait voyagé à Venise puis en Suisse en 1911, inspirant un ensemble d'œuvres qui furent ensuite exposées à la galerie Goupil en 1912, Visions of Switzerland, Venice etc. de W. J. Leech, R.H.A. Les œuvres de cette période révèlent l’accent mis par Leech sur les éléments clés, en éliminant les détails superflus. Comme l'écrit Denise Ferran, « Leech perfectionnait la technique picturale qu'il avait développée à Concarneau à partir de 1903, conscient des harmonies de Whistler et de la fluidité et de la franchise des paysages de Lavery » (D. Ferran, William John Leech An Irish Painter Abroad, 1996, p. 56). Des œuvres aussi sophistiquées que A Shining Palace ont révélé la position de Leech comme l’un des peintres les plus pionniers de sa génération.
