William Thornley (fl.1859-1898)
"Whitby"
Fisherfolk at rest and unloading beached boats on a shore thought to be Hastings beach
Inscribed, oil on canvas, the companion indistinctly signed, 19cm by 29cm & 23.5cm by 38.5cm (2)
See illustration
.Whitby - Re-lined, cleaned and re-varnished. Surface brushwork remains reasonable to good within foreground. Thickness of the paint is somewhat compromised within the sky with some minor retouching. There is evidence of losses to the edges of the canvas most notably within the upper right hand corner and lower left hand edge lower half. The retouching to these areas is rudimentary and highly evident to the eye. Small area of paint loss remaining in lower left hand corner around the signature (approx 0.5cm across). Not examined under UV light. Fisherfolk at rest - In an overall good state of original preservation. Fine to medium sized stable craquelure throughout surface. Slight surface dirt and discoloured varnish. Not examined under UV light.
