William Tillyer,
British b.1938 -
Autumn Wiltshire, 1986;
watercolour on paper, signed lower right 'Tillyer', 151 x 50 cm (ARR)
Provenance: with Bernard Jacobson Gallery, London, WT16127 (according to the label attached to the reverse of the frame); private collection, purchased from the above
Note: This beautiful watercolour shows the artist's unique response to landscape painting, based on an almost-euphoric sense of scale and use of colour. A selection of the artist’s ‘English Landscape Watercolours’ was exhibited with Bernard Jacobson Gallery in 1987, based on his travels across the British Isles. This exhibition saw the artist developing a tradition in British painting that runs from JMW Turner to Patrick Heron and Ivon Hitchens. Works by the artist are in public collections in the UK and USA, including the Brooklyn Art Museum and MoMA, New York.
