"Technical & Scientific French, Edited with Notes and Vocabulary", Edwin B Williams, PhD, Assistant Professor of Romanic Languages, University of Pennsylvania, published by D C Heath & Co, Boston, 1926. First Edition, illustrated.

"[T]here is an urgent need of a modern Scientific French Reader provided with notes and vocabulary is evident and undeniable. Two main objects have been observed in the choice of articles for the present text: (a) To provide a certain portion of material that should be sufficiently elementary so far as its scientific content is concerned, so that the student might concentrate his efforts on the scientific idiom; (b) to furnish a greater amount of more difficult material on recent developments and achievements in science, engineering, invention, and industry, chosen in order to expand the student's technical vocabulary as well as for its informational value.

However, the book is not divided into the two large sections that this plan would seem at first to suggest, but rather into groups determined by the nature of the subject-matter. It will be noticed, therefore, that while degree of difficulty of language is fairly uniform throughout the book, difficulty of scientific content increases independently within each of the several groups, with the result that the last chapter of each group is usually much more difficult than any of the preceding ones of the same group.

Scientific articles, more than any other, necessitate the constant use of visual aid. Attention is therefore drawn to the fact that the student will find in the pages of this book no fewer than fifty-eight diagrams and drawings, as well as seven portraits and maps." [From the Preface]
