In 2004 Wim Botha installed Mieliepap Pietà in the New York Cathedral of St John the Divine, a life-size, mirror image of Michaelangelo’s marble sculpture Pietà (The Pity) (1498-1499), imagining the moment when the body of Christ is taken off the cross and given to his mother Mary to cradle. Botha executed the sculpture using mieliepap, a staple carbohydrate in Africa that references the transatlantic relationship between the artist’s home and the installation sight, as maize is indigenous to North America.
Mieliepap Pietà, Wim Botha, 2004, in New York's Cathedral of St John the Divine
Botha went on exploring Michaelangelo’s monumental work, producing a large-scale bronze as well as a series of ink drawings and oil paintings with expressive mark-making and various degrees of abstraction. The present lot forms part of the Untitled (Mercy Paintings) series, a large-scale canvas with a mirrored reflection of the grieving yet serene figure of Mary, in miniature in pink holding the body of her messiah and her child.
