Winter, Janus de (1882-1951). (Abstract composition). Gouache, 68,5x89 (or vice versa) cm., signed "Afz. A. de Winter (w. the artist's address in Utrecht)" on verso, ±1916.
- Laid down on board; browned and sl. soiled; waterstain along edge; right (of lower) edge outside the board frayed and dam.
= Janus de Winter was one of the first Dutch early followers of Wassily Kandinsky. Between 1912 and 1914 he attended various lectures in Germany by Kandinsky and other members of the Blaue Reiter. He painted classical landscapes for his living. But his real interest lay in painting the mystical unseen, emotions and sounds of music in a lyrical expressionist style of auras and other colourful abstract visions. He was introduced to Theo van Doesburg by Eric Wichmann in 1915. After having seen his expressionist work, Van Doesburg promoted the artist with ardour during lectures and in publications from 1916 onwards. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE XXVIII.
