Władysław Biegański was born in 1857 in Grabów on the Prosna River. From 1870 to 1875, he attended the gymnasium in Piotrków, and then studied medicine at the University of Warsaw, graduating in 1880. From 1883 onward, he was based in Częstochowa, where he practiced medicine and was active in community service; he died in 1917 and is buried at the Kule Cemetery in Częstochowa. In addition to *Diagnostics*, he published, among other works, *The Logic of Medicine, or Principles of General Methodology in the Medical Sciences* (1894), *General Issues in the Theory of Medical Sciences* (1897), “Thoughts and Aphorisms on Medical Ethics” (1899), and the two-volume “Lectures on Acute Infectious Diseases” (1900–1901). He belonged to the Polish school of the philosophy of medicine. The author of the section on upper respiratory tract diseases, Alfred Marcin Sokołowski (1849–1924), born in Włodawa, was a phthisiologist and professor at the University of Warsaw, one of the pioneers of modern treatment of respiratory diseases, and, from 1880 until his death, a contributor to the editorial board of *Gazeta Lekarska*. In 1908, he founded the Anti-Tuberculosis Society.

This volume is of interest to historians of medicine, otolaryngologists, and pulmonologists, as well as collectors of Polish medical literature from the period of the Partitions.
