[ translate ]

Property from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Proceeds to Benefit the Art Fund and Collection Care
Wojciech Fangor
1922 - 2015

New Jersey 5
signed FANGOR, titled NJ5 and dated 1965 (on the reverse)
oil on canvas
55⅞ by 55⅞ in.
141.9 by 141.9 cm.
Executed in 1965.

Condition Report:
This work is in very good condition overall. There is evidence of wear and handling at the edges of the canvas, including scattered smudges and faint rub marks. Upon close inspection, there is evidence of paint separation in the red pigment, inherent to the artist’s working method and chosen medium. Under further close inspection, there are four small, localized protrusions along the upper edge of the composition, and one small indentation near the left edge. In the upper left corner, there is an isolated 8 inch linear crack with a few associated pinpoint losses. There are scattered areas throughout the composition which exhibit faint burnishes, most notably two dark and linear burnishes within the central red circle, measuring 22” and 15” respectively. There are scattered translucent and brown drip accretions visible in the lower half of the composition. Under Ultraviolet light inspection, the aforementioned dark linear burnishes in the central red circle fluoresce darkly and appear to have benefitted from light retouching. Framed.

Framed dimensions: 57 3/8 by 57 1/4. (145.7 by 145.4 cm.)

Provenance:
Mary M. Peer, Short Hills (acquired directly from the artist in 1965)
Acquired from the above as a gift in 1965 by the present owner
