Woman statue - Bamana Bambara - Mali

We can find in their artistic corpus, many objects referring to this practice. Their culture is also rich thanks to the initiatory societies, including the Poro, which is also related to agriculture. Another very common and central theme is femininity. In Bamana art, women are praised for their ability of giving birth and breastfeeding. The style varies, depending on the regions, but typological constants can be observed. Hence, this remarkable statuette of a woman presents very classic wide squared shoulders, from which hang the thin and aesthetic arms. On the opposite axis, the powerful breasts, so dear to Bambara sculptors, are proudly projected forwards. The beautifully curved trunk is covered with scarifications, like the torso. Little powerful legs support the figure and enhance the trunk, the place of filiation. The facies, quite simple but well-balanced, is decorated with a hairdo, fashionable at the 1st half of the 20th century.
