Wonder Woman #2 Solicitation Copy With Promotional Letter (DC, 1942) CGC NM+ 9.6 White pages. Before this mind-bending (single highest-graded) solicitation copy of issue #2 showed up at our offices, we had never seen a copy of the Amazing Amazon's second solo issue with a grade above VF/NM 9.0! This is quite possibly the only existing example of this extraordinary promotional item, and is likely the first time a comic publisher invested in modern public relations practices to promote a new comic character. DC sent promotional press packages, containing Wonder Woman's self-titled second outing and a letter signed by associate editor Alice Marble, to editors at major weekly and monthly magazines, in hopes of increasing the new title's circulation. The letter, included with this comic, noted DC's success in impacting editors and publishers at major journals, as shown by the article from the Hartford Courant that is included with the letter. This particular press packet was found in the papers of a former editor of Harper's Magazine before eventually making its way to our auction. The origin and first appearance of Mars, the God of War, lies inside the pristine H. G. Peter cover. Peter, Sheldon Mayer, M. C. Gaines, and William Marston photo frontispiece. The historical significance of this comic and letter pairing cannot be understated and should be a grail item for Golden Age, Wonder Woman, and DC collectors alike. Overstreet 2023 NM- 9.2 value = $17,500. CGC census 1/24: 1 in 9.6, none higher. HID09710052018 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
