Magnificent EDO period original Buddhist Butsudan or "Buddha altar" with Kannon Bosatsu or Guānyin Japan, ca. 1800 In gold lacquered wood representing Kannon depicted in standing position with beautiful detailed robe, lotus throne and her hands in Anjali Mudra, the gesture of greeting, respect and veneration. A symbolic gesture of reverence that symbolizes the unity of body and mind. Dimensions Butsudan approx. : 28,2 cm high, 26 cm wide (open) , 12 cm wide (closed) , 10 cm deep. Kannon on base approx. 23,5 cm high A very rare Japanese Buddhist shrine in remarkable condition given the age. Signs of aging, see photos. Kannon (Chinese=Guānyīn) personifies compassion and is one of the most widely worshipped divinities in Asia and Japan.
