Impressive very old gilded wooden statue of Amida 阿弥陀仏, Buddha of infinite light and life Japan, Edo period, ca. 1800 Large original statue: 39 cm high Agewear as depicted. See photos. Good condition. No restorations. Signs of age related wear such as loss of paint and gilt. The mandorla is missing. No damage. Amida is depicted in standing position with its hands in Vitarka Mudra. The meaning of this gesture is that wisdom is accessible to all. The outstretched hand shows Amida's compassion to all. A very rare Japanese Buddhist statue in remarkable condition given the age.
