Impressive very old gilded wooden Buddhist statue of Great Sage Nichiren 日蓮 Enchantingly beautifully painted robe Japan, Edo period, ca. 1800 Japanese priest Nichiren is depicted in sitting position and holds a scroll containing the Lotus Sutra in his left hand. Nichiren is known for his sole devotion to the Lotus Sutra, asserting that it was Buddha's ultimate teachings and was the exclusive method to attain enlightenment.
