Wooded Landscape with Figures by a Stream; Piedmont School, 18th century; oil on canvas, 102 x 128 cm
The painting depicts a vast wooded landscape crossed by a stream and animated by small figures, in a dramatic and decorative style typical of 18th-century landscape painting. The composition is constructed through rows of trees, luminous openings, and a progressive expansion of space toward the background. The work belongs to the tradition of Piedmontese painting, showing affinities with the landscape works of Scipione and Vittorio Amedeo Cignaroli, in which the Venetian landscape tradition is reinterpreted within the context of the Savoy court. The lush vegetation, the diffused light, and the presence of tiny figures set within the landscape evoke the elegant, Arcadian style that characterizes much of his work. Set in a gilded frame.
