Workshop of Guido Reni (Bologna 1575 - 1642)
Workshop of Guido Reni (Bologna 1575 - 1642)
St. Peter
Oil on canvas
67,5 x 50 cm
The present painting probably refers to a lost prototype. Reni first experimented with this subject in 1633-34 in a painting now in the Prado Museum in Madrid, and later in another work from around 1637, now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. By observing the cited works, it is found that the quality of this work legitimizes its attribution. In addition, the work presented here has a posture that mirrors the two mentioned, a chiaroscuro intensity and a truly commendable psychological pathos of note.
