Towards the end of the 19th century, a new mobility among people began to develop, and watchmakers all over the world had to further develop and improve their designs to accommodate this. The globe is divided into 24 time zones, reflecting 15 degrees of longitude, starting at the meridian in Greenwich. Clocks took this into account with a rotating bezel, which was set so that the local time was at 12 o'clock. The time in any of the locations marked on the bezel could then be read from the outer day/night ring. The inventor of this system was Louis Cottier, a renowned and immensely talented watchmaker from Geneva.
