World War One Officer's Canadian Memorial Cross to Lieutenant Richard Joseph Burke, who was lost at sea after the Passenger Steamer Missanabie was sunk by UB-87, named inscription verso and stamped 'Sterling' Lieutenant Richard Joseph Burke, Canadian Forestry Corps who died on the 8th /9th of September 1918 aged 56 aboard the Passenger Steamer Missanabie which was part of Convoy OL34 from Liverpool to New York. Lieutenant Burke was returning to Canada after Service in France, SS Missanabie was spotted by UB-87 and sunk 52 miles South East of Daunt Rock, 45 passengers were lost. Richard was the son of the late Richard J. Burke, husband of the late Anny Burke, born in County Waterford, Ireland. Served in the South African War with the 8th Battalion King's Liverpool Regiment as a Serjeant Major. He is remembered at the Halifax Memorial, panel 2.
