Wosera / Arapesh Lintel, Papua New Guinea. Wood, Red, Yellow, Black, and White Pigment. This carved wood lintel features large faces on each end and 13 small figures in the center, with polychrome decorations painted throughout. Measures approximately 10" x 117" x 4". In very good condition appropriate for age and use. Made for ritual use. The lack of patina suggests minimal exposure to the elements. Retains informational sheet from James Willis Gallery, San Francisco, for the collection of John A. Williams. This item originates from the estate of John A. Williams, a distinguished philanthropist and renowned collector. Mr. Williams and his partner Dewitt Hart were influential members of San Francisco's art society and were celebrated for their discerning taste in modern, ethnographic, and fine art. Over the years, they hosted numerous exhibitions in their home, showcasing their prestigious collection to appreciative audiences. All proceeds of items from this estate benefit the Hart Williams Rainbow Fund, a nonprofit working with the LGBTQIA+ community in the San Francisco Bay Area.
