Wulfenite Glove Mine, Glove Mine group, Cottonwood Canyon, Tyndall District, Santa Rita Mts, Santa Cruz Co., Arizona, USA "A cluster of somewhat intergrown flat somewhat curved caramel colored wulfenite crystals up to about an inch in diameter. Typical of the crystals dug from the great pocket by Dick Bideaux and Bernie Haag [sic]. Bought the specimen from Earl Shad at his little rock shop in Yermo, CA." - Rock H. Currier In the 1950s, the miners at the Glove Mine opened up a cavern that was completely lined with thick, caramel orange, tabular Wulfenite crystals. Dick Bideaux and Bernie Hagg got the choice assignment of removing the specimens, after the mining company contacted George Bideaux, Dick's father. This was the most spectacular Wulfenite discovery at the Glove Mine - a legendary story; in the intervening 60+ years there has never been another 'hit' like this, even though many have tried. Specimens from this 'pocket' are instantly recognizable due to their sub-adamantine luster, thick octagonal shaped crystal form, unique caramel orange color, and interwoven clusters. Back in the day, George and Bernie had to figure out how to price the hundreds of specimens that they extracted. They settled on the formula of making all 4x5 inch specimens $5 (!). Rock recognized this as a 'must have' for his collection way back in the 1964. He paid more than $5, he paid $30 (!) and we're glad that he did. Comes with a custom acrylic base. Overall Measurements: 4.1 x 3.2 x 1.5 inches (10.5 x 8.2 x 3.7 cm) Offered at no reserve Provenance: Bought from Earl Shad, field collected by Dick Bideaux and Bernie Hagg [RHC #268, acquired 1964] [Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
