XU BEIHONG (1895-1953), ATTRIBUTED TO, CHINESE PAINTING OF GALLOPING HORSE

[ translate ]

A Chinese painting attributed to Xu Beihong (1895-1953), galloping horse. The steed holds its head high and charges forward with hooves lifted. Mane and tail stream in the wind, brimming with dynamic tension. The work renders the muscular volume of the horse's body with broad washes of ink, integrating Western realist modeling. Sharp, dense ink outlines define its bony structure. Solid form and void complement each other in bold, unrestrained brushwork.
Ink and color on paper, mounted.
Image: 69 x 92 cm.

Note: The work bears an inscription to Gustav Ecke and an inscription in the name of Xu Beihong, with seal marks. The inscription bears the date '28th year' (1939).

Provenance: By repute, from an important private collection.

Gustav Ecke (1896-1971) was a German art historian and scholar of Chinese art. He joined Amoy University in 1923, later taught at Qinghua University and Fujen University in Beijing, and was associated with the National Institute of Architecture. He was a pioneering scholar of Chinese hardwood furniture and published Chinese Domestic Furniture in 1944. In 1945 he married artist and scholar Tseng Yu-Ho (Zeng Youhe). The couple moved to Hawaii in 1949, where Ecke served as curator of Chinese art at the Honolulu Academy of Arts and as professor of Asian art at the University of Hawaii from 1950 to 1966.
