Description
This hanging scroll is a freehand flower-and-bird work by Xu Linlu, depicting magnolia blossoms, garden rock and two birds. The sturdy magnolia branches are rendered with bold brushstrokes. White magnolia flowers are accented with crimson stamens, fresh and vivid. Pale blue palm leaves in the background enrich the spatial layers. At the lower part, a large garden rock is painted with splashed ink and light ochre, solid and primitive. Two small birds rest on the rock, depicted with concise brushwork and lively expression. The grass at the bottom is drawn with cursive, forceful lines. Inheriting the freehand style of Qi Baishi, Xu Linlu’s brushwork is powerful and unrestrained, focusing on momentum and artistic conception with restrained, elegant colours. Magnolia symbolizes nobility and purity. The composition presents strong contrast between dense and sparse elements, with virtual and real spaces interwoven. It is a representative work of his large freehand flower-and-bird painting.
