Ɏ A RARE IVORY NETSUKE OF A DUTCHMAN AND MONKEY

Lot details Unsigned Japan, Kyoto, late 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) The Dutchman carved standing on his toes somewhat awkwardly as he cheekily looks to the left, holding the brim of his hat and a monkey close to his chest, as if he has stolen the simian. Good, functional himotoshi to the back; the ivory bearing a superb, yellowish patina. HEIGHT 7.3 cm Condition: Good condition with old wear and age cracks. Some rubbing and wear to incised details. Provenance: From the collection of Dr. Ferdinand and Dr. Gudrun Thaler-Szulyovsky, acquired at Galerie Zacke in 1988 for 19,000 Austrian Schillings, and thence by descent in the same family. The couple, who had both been practicing law, met in 1967 through their mutual passion for art.
