Ɏ A TALL IVORY NETSUKE OF SEIOBO

Lot details Unsigned Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Published & Exhibited: Association Franco-Japonaise, Netsuke Sagemono, Paris, 2019, p. 66, no. 111. A remarkably large and fine ivory netsuke of Seiobo, the Queen Mother of the West, holding a peach branch in one hand, the other enveloped by her sleeve. She is dressed in a flowing robe with billowing sleeves, incised at the hem with scrolling foliage, her coiffure finely carved with the hair piled up high and in loops. Asymmetrical himotoshi to the back, the larger hole generously excavated in the shape of a gourd. The ivory bearing a gorgeously lustrous, deep-yellow patina. HEIGHT 14 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor surface wear and age cracks. An old, smoothened chip to the edge of the top bun. Provenance: Rolf Schmoll, November 1994.
