Y Attributed to Gervase Spencer (British 1715-1763)
A gentleman, wearing lilac coat, yellow waistcoat, white stock and cravat, his natural hair powdered and worn en queue and tied with a black ribbon
Watercolour on ivory, oval
Signed with initials G.S (lower right), possibly later added
4.5cm (1¾ in.) high
In a gilt metal frame with glazed border revealing a band of blonde plaited hair, the reverse with blue enamel
Condition Report:
Light surface dirt throughout. The miniature has slipped in its frame slightly and the blue glass reverse is a little loose. Traces of a gold/gilt outline visible to the miniature at the extreme edge is now rubbed and starting to fade. There appears to be an area of loss to the sitter's coat (lower right, approx. 3mm) but it is not apparent what has caused this. Unexamined out of glazed frame.
