Y English School (c.1800)
A double-sided portrait miniature; the obverse with a lady, wearing white dress, her powdered hair with blue ribbon; the reverse depicting Venus and Cupid in a landscape
Watercolour on ivory, oval
Reverse inscribed Hope Springs Eternal In The Human Breast
6cm (2¼ in.) high
In a gilt metal mount

Condition Report:
Lady: There is a vertical crack running the length of the right side (3.8cm). Some very light discolouration to areas of the background, together with some light surface dirt and scratching. The miniature has slipped in the frame slightly and there is a very slight hint that the ivory is starting to bow. Unexamined out of glazed frame.

Hope Springs: Some discolouration to the green pigment in the trees which has now turned brown. Some of the applied detail to the forest floor has been lost at the extreme edge but this is barely noticeable. There are also traces of associated glue residue, but this will have been present since the works conception. There is no crack to this miniature, and therefore this is on a separate ivory sheet to the portrait to the obverse. The miniature has slipped in the frame slightly. Unexamined out of glazed frame.

The mount with some general wear, nicks and tarnishing commensurate with age. Condition Report Disclaimer
