Y Samuel Cotes (British 1734-1818)
A young woman, wearing purple satin dress with white lace trim, lace choker, her hair upswept
Watercolour on ivory, oval
Signed with initials and dated 1757 (lower right)
3cm (1 in.) high
Within a foil backed garnet border and a blue and white enamelled gold frame

Provenance:
Sale, Sotheby's, Amsterdam, Furniture, Sculpture and Works of Art, 15 December 1994, lot 212 (sold as Samuel Coates [sic])

Condition Report:
Some very light spots of surface dirt throughout, and a more concentrated area of surface dirt to the lower framing edge, which has caused some discolouration, although this looks superficial. There are very small gaps between the edge of the miniature and the mount to the side (approx. 2mm), possibly caused by some very slight bowing but this is barely noticeable. Unexamined out of glazed frame.

One or two of the surrounding garnets with some damage or loss, but this is very slight and visible in the online illustration. Light nicks and dings to the reverse commensurate with age. Condition Report Disclaimer
