Edo period (1615-1868), probably 19th century
The rounded rectangular roiro body lacquered in gold and coloured togidashi maki-e, kirikane and e-nashiji with a continuous scene depicting a pheasant perched on a rock among flowering peonies on one side and other birds in flight on the other, the interior of rich nashiji; signed on the base in gold hiramaki-e Shunsho with a red kao. 8.3cm x 5.3cm (3¼in x 2 1/8in).
