The Kongo peoples bring together multiple ethnic groups and kingdoms of different importance: the Yombe, the Vili, the Sundi, the Cabindais, the Woyo, the Beembé, the Dondo. . . They unified in the 14th century to found the ancient kingdom of Kongo in the Cabinda estuary region and northwest Angola. The founder of this kingdom was the warlord Nimi, around 1400; its capital was Mbanza (in Angola today) . The Kongo kingdom weakened under the domination of the Portuguese then the regional wars and finally by the division of the kingdom into its different ethnic groups which no longer recognized the central power.

We clearly recognize in this face the features also present on the Nkisi type statues which the priest used, whose eyes were also inlaid with glass or pieces of mirror.
