Yankee Doodle 1856 Manuscript

Manuscript Document Signed by Mary Margarett Duff, 3pp octavo, April 22, 1856, being the lyrics and short history of "Yankee Doodle" with cover titled "Yankee Doodle." Fine condition. Yankee Doodle is one of the best-known songs associated with the American Revolution. Originally a British military tune, it was used during the French and Indian War and the early Revolutionary period to mock colonial soldiers as unsophisticated "Yankees." Rather than being insulted, American troops embraced the song and turned it into a symbol of pride and defiance. The lyrics, which humorously describe a countryman trying to imitate fashionable British customs, became a favorite among Continental Army soldiers and were reportedly played after major American victories. Over time, "Yankee Doodle" evolved from a British satire into a celebrated patriotic song and remains an enduring symbol of American independence and national identity.
