Yellow Jade Carved You with Zitan Frame, 18th Century

清乾隆 黃玉提梁卣 紫檀架 A Chinese hanging yellow jade "You" vase dating from the 18th century with a zitan wood stand. The stand is inlaid with silver wire, and the jade vase is carved with trefoil roundels on the lid and in a band around the body. The body also features a ribbed band with 3 trefoil roundels on either side beneath the handles. The vase is in the shape of an archaic bronze tiliang you, the shoulders flanked by a pair of handles enclosing an overarching rope twist handle. Three bulges are carved out from each side beneath the handles. The body of the jade is carved in relief with paralleled vertical lines beneath a series of roundels containing trefoil swirls. The domed cover is decorated with round ruyi head carvings. The you vase is hanging on the original, elaborately carved and pierced zitan stand with silver inlays. This exquisite vase is of an attractive, rich yellow tone and well polished. It is rare to find tiliang you with its original zitan stand. Both the vase and stand are intricately carved, reflecting the super workmanship from the Imperial workshop.

Dimensions are: the jade vase without the handle measures 3 3/4 inches tall X 2 3/4 inches wide, the stand measures 9 3/4 inches tall X 5 1/2 inches wide. All measurements are approximate.

Condition: The stand has multiple areas of repair, the jade vase is in good condition.

Provenance: From Mr. Hwong in Montreal, Canada, purchased in Hong Kong around 1975 from private collectors. A similar jade you complete with a hanging stand from the Qianlong period can be found in the Beijing Palace Museum (Fig.1). A Qing dynasty jade example can be found in the National Palace Museum item 003391-N000000000 (Fig.2).
