Yuri Gagarin Signed "Glory To October!" Envelope Featuring Colorful Rocket & Planets Cachet
Signed envelope
An envelope commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1917 Russian Revolution, or October Revolution, boldly signed by cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968) in Cyrillic letters along the top. Ca. October 18, 1967. [Moscow, Soviet Union.] The envelope features a vibrantly colored cachet at left depicting a rocket jetting off into a violet and purple Space densely packed with planets, moons, and galaxies. Affixed with a special cancelled stamp, next to a pre-printed stamp, in the postage section, and also bearing an additional philatelic handstamp near the bottom. Publication and copyright information is printed on the envelope flap verso. The address panel is blank. The envelope-sealing glue is still untouched and intact verso. Expected wear including isolated scuffs and slightly blunted corners. Pen-inscribed by a former collector with a retail price in rubles verso. Else near fine. 6.25" x 4.375". Provenance: Superior Stamp & Coin Fall 1996 Space Memorabilia Auction, Lot 1530.
Yuri Gagarin was a trained Soviet Air Force pilot and officer who was handpicked in 1960 to test into the new Soviet space program, later becoming one of the program's top candidates, called the Sochi 6. Gagarin's psychological and physical endurance, as well as his small statue (5'2"), made him an ideal candidate for future space missions. Gagarin broke records when he successfully manned the Vostok I space capsule into outer space on April 12, 1961. He made a full orbit around Earth lasting 108 minutes before parachuting into the atmosphere at 23,000 feet. Gagarin was killed in a routine training mission on March 27, 1968 at age 34.
