[ translate ]

A work of Chinese calligraphy attributed to Zeng Guofan (1811-1872). This is a seven-character regular-script couplet. The paper bears subtle hidden round dragon patterns, refined and luxurious. The large regular script characters are dignified, robust and steady with powerful, substantial brushwork and inherent structural strength. The characters stretch open with grandeur, fully mastering the rules of Tang regular script. The dedication reads "Written at the request of Vice Military Commander Bailou". Couplet text: Zhua Chi Mi Tian, two formidable foes; Su Li Guang Ping, three secretariat officials.
Ink on paper, hanging scroll.
Image: 129 x 33 cm each.

Note: The work bears an inscription in the name of Zeng Guofan, with seal marks.

Provenance: By repute, from an important private collection.

Gustav Ecke (1896-1971) was a German art historian and scholar of Chinese art. He joined Amoy University in 1923, later taught at Qinghua University and Fujen University in Beijing, and was associated with the National Institute of Architecture. He was a pioneering scholar of Chinese hardwood furniture and published Chinese Domestic Furniture in 1944. In 1945 he married artist and scholar Tseng Yu-Ho (Zeng Youhe). The couple moved to Hawaii in 1949, where Ecke served as curator of Chinese art at the Honolulu Academy of Arts and as professor of Asian art at the University of Hawaii from 1950 to 1966.
