ZHANG DAQIAN (1899-1983) AND PU RU (1896-1963), ATTRIBUTED TO, CHINESE PAINTING OF SCHOLAR UNDER
A Chinese painting attributed to Zhang Daqian (1899-1983) and Pu Ru (1896-1963), scholar under pine tree. This colored landscape with figures depicts a scholar holding a cane viewing scenery beneath pine trees. On the left side of the painting stands an aged gnarled pine, its twisting branches stretching skyward, dense pine needles firm and upright. Steep rocks lie beside it rendered with axe-cut texture strokes blended with light washes, revealing craggy rock bones. At the bottom, a scholar clad in white robes, wearing a headscarf and with flowing garments, holds a wooden cane and stands quietly in profile gazing toward pine valleys. Flowing and graceful lines define his robes while his calm expression embodies the seclusion of reclusive life.
Ink and color on paper, mounted.
Image: 93 x 48 cm.
Note: The work bears an inscription to Gustav Ecke and inscriptions in the names of Zhang Daqian and Pu Ru, with seal marks. The inscription is dated Bingxu (1946).
Provenance: By repute, from an important private collection.
