ZHANG DAQIAN (1899-1983), ATTRIBUTED TO, CHINESE PAINTING OF A JEWELED DUNHUANG BODHISATTVA

[ translate ]

A Chinese painting attributed to Wang Xuetao (1903-1982), mandarin ducks in reed pond. This hanging scroll is a colored flower-and-bird painting depicting the rustic charm of mandarin ducks in a reed pond. In the foreground, a pair of mandarin ducks rest and swim by the shallow bank. One stands upon mossy stone with unhurried poise, its plumage rendered with delicate washes; the other floats partially submerged, with gentle ripples spreading outward. Reeds grow densely, their seed heads drifting lightly, dotted with red smartweed. A mantis perches on reed tips while a colourful butterfly flutters through the air, these insects rendered with great liveliness.
Ink and color on paper, hanging scroll.
Image: 81 x 32 cm.

Note: The work bears an inscription to Gustav Ecke and an inscription in the name of Wang Xuetao, with seal marks. The inscription is dated Bingxu (1946).

Provenance: By repute, from an important private collection.

Gustav Ecke (1896-1971) was a German art historian and scholar of Chinese art. He joined Amoy University in 1923, later taught at Qinghua University and Fujen University in Beijing, and was associated with the National Institute of Architecture.
