Zande People Wood and Wicker Shield
North central Democratic Republic of Congo (Bas-Uele Province) and Southwestern South Sudan (Gbudwe, Maridi, Yei River States): Eastern Zande people shield, circa 1900. Partially-dyed oval wickerwork with geometrical patterns and wood frame; wooden handle with wickerwork, hide patch at bottom. With original, decorated gripboard. Hide attached to the bottom to protect the wickerwork when putting the shield down. Another shield with identical decoration on front is in the collection of the Africa Museum in Belgium (acc. no. 10867).
