Description: Copper-engraved map, hand-colored in outline, colored pictorial cartouche of exotic animals. 30.5x39.5 cm (12x15½").Shows the Northwest of America, the Bering Strait and Kamtschatka. The chimerical Northwest Passage and Straits of Anian (just north of "Fou-Sang", the equally mythical Chinese colony) are clearly depicted. In the sale catalogue of the PBA auction of his collection, Warren Heckrotte noted about the map: "This map is copied from one by Robert de Vaugondy that appeared in his Memoire sur les Pays de l'Asia et de l'Amerique, Paris 1774; a fact that I have not seen noted in the literature. The cartouche shows an Elephant, Rhinocerous, Ostrich and Crocodile."
Condition Report: A little soiling, ill-crease at centerfold, small marginal chip; very good.
