Zeikhur Sumakh
mid 19th century, 198 x 125 cm, East Caucasus, Kuba
The Harshang design of this rare Zeikhur sumakh derives from older Caucasian workshop carpets (see example in Burns). The soft colours, the high quality of the materials and the unusually narrow, single-band border of blue-and-white undulating lines (“running dog”) indicate an early date. A comparable sumakh has been in the collection of the London Victoria and Albert Museum (inv. no. T.14-1911) since 1911.
