Cowskin Buddha Face no.12 produced in 2010 by the Chinese artist Zhang Huan is a unique work that attests to the artist's deep commitment to Buddhist beliefs. While Huan is best known for his performative art pieces, in this work he devotes himself to the practice of sculpture by producing an effigy of the mystical figure of Buddha. This is not the first time that the artist has resorted to this type of practice. His first sculptures are inspired by fragmented body parts derived from religious statues found in Tibet.
From 2008 Huan creates monumental works in cow skin fixed on a metal structure. Providing milk to feed its offspring, the cow is a symbol of motherhood and life. Thus, by associating the sacred figure of the Buddha with this animal, Huan emphasizes the importance of this mystical character that never ceases to fuel his beliefs and his creative process. The figure with closed eyes constitutes a symbol of transcendence and embodies the cultural environment in which the artist continues to evolve.

Cowskin Buddha Face no.12 réalisé en 2010 par l’artiste chinois Zhang Huan est une œuvre inédite qui atteste du profond engagement de l’artiste vis-à-vis des croyances Bouddhistes. Si ce dernier est plutôt réputé pour ses performances, dans cette œuvre, Huan se consacre à la pratique de la sculpture en produisant l’effigie du personnage mystique de Bouddha. Ce n’est pas la première fois que l’artiste procède à une telle démarche. Ses premières sculptures font déjà écho aux fragments de corps issus de statues religieuses retrouvées au Tibet.
A partir de 2008 Huan créer des œuvres monumentales en peau de vache fixée sur une structure en métal. Fournissant du lait pour nourrir sa progéniture, la vache constitue un symbole de maternité et de vie. C’est ainsi qu’en associant la figure sacrée du Boudha à cet animal, Huan met en exergue l’importance de ce personnage mystique qui ne cesse d’alimenter ses croyances ainsi que sa démarche créative. Cette figure aux yeux clos constitue un symbole de transcendance et incarne le milieu culturel dans lequel l’artiste évolue.
