Biography: Zilia Sanchez was born in Havana, Cuba on July 12, 1928. She resided in Spain from 1960 to 1962, lived in the U.S.A. from 1962 to 1971 and in San Juan, Puerto Rico since 1971. In her artistic work she developed mostly painting, sculpture, drawing and scenographic design. Zilia graduated from the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes San Alejandro in 1957. Between the years 1966 and 1968 she studied at the Instituto Central de Conservación y Restauración in Madrid, Spain and from 1968 to 1970 she continued her education at the Pratt Institute in the city of New York, U.S.A. Her first individual exhibition took place in 1953; it was called "Zilia" like herself and took place at the Lyceum in Havana, Cuba. Already in 1965 she showed some of her works at the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan and also in 1967 at the gallery El Bosco in Madrid, Spain. Later on 1984 she presented Erotic in the Inter Latin American Gallery of New York, U.S.A and in 1991 she also displayed Tres Decadas in the Museo Casa Roig in Humacao, Puerto Rico. She has been involved in collective shows too. Among them are : In 1948 Salon de Bellas Artes, Círculo de Bellas Artes, Havana, Cuba. In 1958 she was at the I Bienal Interamericana de Pintura y Grabado, Museo Nacional de Artes Plasticas, Mexico City, Mexico. She was also selected to participate in 1997 in Breaking Barriers.
