after Alphonse Nicholas-Michel Mandevare (French, 1759–1829), Two Studies of a Windswept Tree

each black chalk on paper, bearing monogram "M" to lower; the vertical piece on wove paper and the horizontal piece on laid paper, presented in uniform framing under museum glass with archival double matting.
DOA 31.5 x 37.5 in.
Mandevare regularly exhibited at the Paris Salon at the turn of the century. In 1804, he published his Principes raisonnés du Paysage à l'usage des Écoles des Départements de l`Empire Français, dessinés d'après nature. In the influential book he gives instructions for artists and amateurs to draw individual trees, including several lithographs with willows, bridges, rocks, etc., in order to finally combine them into a "picturesque" overall view.
