A Brake (or Break) carriage is typified by the passengers riding at the same height as the driver, and derives from a carriage design commonly used to train, or break, horses to pull a carriage. This particular “Break de Chasse” carriage was constructed by Kellner, a company whose ownership spanned three generations and went on to produce some of the most notable coachwork on the finest automobile chassis of the Classic Era, including one of the six Bugatti Royales. It bears a hand-painted coat of arms, and according to notes on file this insignia is that of the prominent Van Hoboken family of Rotterdam.

Seating configurations varied on break carriages; on this example, the rear seats are in the dos-a-dos, or back-to-back arrangement, and the carriage can comfortably transport six, including the driver. Beautifully restored throughout, this fine Kellner Break is an outstanding example of luxury transportation of the era.
