c1790 Georgian Silver Mounted Cowrie Seashell Snuff Box
A beautiful and rare c1790 George III Silver mounted cowrie seashell snuff box in very good clean condition.
The box has been made by cutting the underside of a cowrie shell and fitting a silver collar frame with a hinged flat lid. The silver is not hallmarked but is undoubtedly Sterling silver and is decorated with hand carved scroll decorations. The lid has a snug fit to ensure the snuff doesn't leak or dry out.
The inside of the lid has the owner's initials H I. Condition is good, although there a couple of stress cracks to the edge of the shell. They are, however, stable and do not detract from the beauty of the piece.
