c1800 Chinese Jade Buddhist Tablets China Qing Guanyin Qianlong Emperor

Jade has always enjoyed special consideration in China as the insignia of the supreme power, sacred tools in ceremonies. The Confucians consider it the symbol of the five cardinal virtues: goodness, righteousness, wisdom, courage and purity while the while Taoists consumed it to try to attain immortality.

A rare undated jade tablet of Buddhist Chinese text. This collection of 8 jade tablets are Spinach green in color with gold engravings of Guanyin, an East Asian Bodhisattva, two dragons, and Chinese text. These tablets contain ten lines with six traditional Chinese characters per line on a Grey pattern woven over silk covered Zitan wooden boards and the production marker that resembles the Qianlong mark, from the Qianlong Emperor of the Qing Dynasty on the front and back cover. The calligraphy was written by a court official then engraved into the jade pages and painted gold. Several jade books were made during the reign of Qianlong, whose penchant for this stone and partiality to all sorts of extravagances is renowned.

This text, about the Bodhisattva Guanyin who is associated with compassion and worshipped by Mahayana Buddhists and followers of Chinese folk religions, also known as the "Goddess of Mercy" in English, meaning literally "[The One Who] Perceives the Sounds of the World", serves as a pretext for a rare work that unites the preciousness of the green jade with cloud patterns highlighted in ink with the austerity of the engraved stela.
