A beautiful early 19th century Dutch brass and copper tobacco case in near mint condition.
The case is a long oval shape and is made of a central band of copper, with a brass top and bottom. The top is hinged into a lid. It is in wonderful condition with little or no use, and has been hand engraved with religious pictures and quotations from the Bible.
The writing is in an archaic Dutch or Flemish and differs quite a bit from the modern language. On the lid is a quote from Lamentations 3 - v.16 -17 (Klaagliederen). -"He has made my teeth grind on gravel, and made me cower in ashes; my soul is bereft of peace, I have forgotten what peace is;. On the bottom of the case is a similar engraving with Psalm 31 v. 12 - 13. -" I have passed out of mind like one who is dead...
These tobacco cases were sometimes made in Germany and exported to Holland, where they were engraved.
