c1810 Watercolour of Lord Byron After George Sanders

An attractive c1810 Georgian watercolour of George Gordon, better known as the 6th Lord Byron (1788-1824), in its period frame and glazed.
It is based on the c1807 oil on canvas that is in the Royal Collection Trust. Unlike the original which measures just over 1 metre in height, this painting is only about 30 cm. It depicts Byron having stepped from a boat and standing on the rocky shore of a sea or unnamed lake. In the original he is accompanied by his valet, usually identified as Robert Rushton, here however, there is only a hint of a boat in the background. He is dressed like a sailor. The wind blows Byron’s curls and his jacket is thrown open to reveal a billowing shirt. Typically of his character, he stands with self-assurance on the shore in a pose reminiscent of classical sculpture.
Sanders’s original painting was the first portrait Byron commissioned of himself and dates from the publication of his earliest poems, when he was not yet world famous. The portrait was intended as a memento for his mother before he departed on his first trip abroad.
George Gordon Byron, 6th Baron Byron FRS, also known as Lord Byron, was a British nobleman, poet, peer, politician, and leading figure in the Romantic movement. He is regarded as one of the greatest British poets.
The watercolour is in good condition. The wooden frame is made of burr walnut.
