c1882 Bragozzi Vessel in Venetian Lagoon by R T Wilding

A very handsome watercolour of a Bragozzi Fishing Vessel in the Venetian Lagoon, with the city on the horizon.
The painting is by a relatively unknown and under-rated British artist Robert Thornton Wilding, whose work is generally dated around 1890 to 1928. His date of birth and death are unknown but his style is very similar and often confused with the much more famous Thomas Bush Hardy. He did not seem to exhibit and this has contributed to his lack of recognition. He did specialise in marine pictures.
What is very interesting about this watercolour is that it is extremely similar to T.B. Hardy's paintings of Venice, but from a slightly different angle, even down to the markings on the sail of the vessel. It is therefore possible that they were painting at the same time and that Wilding may have been a pupil. This would explain the similarity of style. Hardy painted in Venice around 1882, so we are dating it at around the same time.
The painting is well mounted, framed and glazed. It is signed in the bottom right corner.
Painting Size: 21.5 x 14.5cm (8 1/2 x 5 3/4 inches)
FrameSize: 42 x 36cm (16 1/2 x 14 1/8 inches)
Weight: 1210g
