This traditional tale, ‘The Matsuyama Mirror,’ is an illustrated children’s tale telling the story of a happy family with a beautiful wife, who having never seen a mirror before finds delight in her reflection and upon falling ill tells her daughter that when she dies she can look into the mirror for the first time and then everyday hence and see her mother again. The daughter looking like her mother but never having seen her reflection grows up to ‘see’ her mother in the mirror every night and morning not knowing it is simply her growing into the image or her mother.
