c1900 Grand Canal Venice Watercolour by Thomas Mortimer

A beautiful and rare watercolour scene of Venice by the Southwest artist Thomas Mortimer.
Although often confused for Lewis Mortimer and his famous harbour scenes of Cornwall, Devon and Dorset, Thomas Mortimer flourished around the same period, but has a more formal Victorian style. He is famous for his harbours, coastal scenes, continental town and lake scenes between 1880 and 1920. The watercolours are often beach scenes with figures and fishing boats. The subjects include South Coast views, Dutch and french towns and very occasionally, as in this case, Venice. He obviously visited Italy at some time. The painting shows the Grand Canal, going down towards the Church of Santa Maria della Salute. Most likely painted from one of the bridges, like Ponte dell’ Accademia. There is a vibrancy to the picture with numerous boats plying their trade. It is signed T. Mortimer. The picture is mounted, framed and glazed and is in very nice condition.
