c1900 Jason and the Argonauts Phanolith Jasperware Charger, Stahl

A beautiful and very finely made Jasperware large charger by the German company Mettlach (Villeroy & Boch), c1900.
The classical Greek design is by Jean Baptiste Stahl (1863 - 1940) and represents Jason and the Argonauts, where they are disembarking from the ship. The figures are made in white translucent china applied on to a eau de nil (light blue) background. The translucence gives a very attractive 3 dimensional effect. The reverse is a buff colour and has the Mettlach stamp with the image of the Abbey and VB. It is also marked GEGEN NACHBILDUNG and GESCHUTZE. The pattern number is 2442 and a small 98 stamp probably indicates the date 1898. Condition is very good except for a hairline kiln crack in the white surface. This does not detract from the beauty of the piece, neither does it affect it structurally. We are also listing separately a similar charger by Stahl with The Trojan Lady and her Servants (2443).
Jean-Baptiste Stahl developed his own style and techniques during his work at Villeroy & Boch in Mettlach, Saar, Germany. The name Phanolith was coined for this kind of jasperware. His work is praised for the translucency of the white porcelain on a coloured background. Stahl's work is known for its refined modelling and the vibrancy of its figures. He thus combined the benefits of jasperware and pâte-sur-pâte. A stand at the World's Fair 1900 in Paris was the first major public presentation of his work and gained him a gold medal.
